There’s no explanation given as to why the boys have to be starved for 5 days, nor why the Run happens in first place. The worst is the towns only cop gets a joy out of beating and killing kids because he can. If they fail to participate or deviate to go look food, they are killed by the adults. Then they partake in the Run: walking streets armed with whatever weapon they can find to hunt a scarecrow with a pumpkin head (the October Boy) that rises every Halloween. In essence, boys 16-18 are locked in their room for 5 days and not allowed to eat anything, as well as given just enough water to survive.
The author raises a lot of questions that are never answered, and by the end the plot just falls apart on itself.
But this book isn’t scary, it’s more so just odd. I love Halloween, and I’ve been dying for a good haunted scarecrow story.
